Lesson 4 of 10 · 4 min

Sizes, colours and stock

Options make variants, each with its own SKU, price and stock, and Inventory keeps the numbers true.

  1. Sizes & options

Under Sizes & options, add an option and its values: Glaze, with Sage, Oat and Charcoal. The usual ones for its kind are a click away: Flavour and Size for a protein powder, Shade for a foundation. Add a second and every combination becomes its own variant. Up to three options.
  2. Variants

Each variant has an SKU if you use them, a price if it costs more, and its own stock: a new one is given what it starts with right there, and after that its stock lives on Inventory. Switch one off and it's no longer sold, without losing its history. Out of one glaze? The others keep selling.
  3. What customers see

On Inventory, a product's stock settings say when “Only 3 left” shows on your page. At nothing, it says Sold out, and customers can ask to be emailed when it's back. Something made to order? Switch off Count stock and it never sells out.
  4. Orders take stock down by themselves the moment they're placed, and a cancelled or lapsed order puts it back. Two people can never buy the last one: whoever checks out first gets it.
  5. Inventory

Your stock is under Products in the menu, in its Inventory tab. Receive a delivery adds a whole delivery at once; Add or remove records a return or a breakage; Count sets what's really on the shelf, and if an order came in while you counted, it asks again rather than writing over it. History shows every change, and where it came from.
